What's with the 8th of March celebrations???

Was wondering .....whats the big deal about celebrating women for a day? Does it imply that we acknowledge that we aren't significant for the rest of the year? Does that mean we have to make an "effort" to appreciate ourselves over a day and in turn remind the ones around us that we are the "significant " other? Is this just another marketing gimmick for better sales around this time of the year?

Well, I was fortunate to witness a wonderful women's day program held to honour a few women for their extraordinary achievements by an NGO. With that, I saw a totally new dimension to the whole "celebrate the woman" mantra. Apart from the inspiring stories of the women achievers, I saw yesterday, I realized a very important lesson. We need such a day simply to remind ourselves and appreciate the progress we have made in the world, even if not personally but as the other gender. Why celebrate a gender? What is the point?

I was dumbfounded ( also due to my lack of awareness) that the initial reason to celebrate the women's day was the final victory over the passing of a bill on women's voting rights! I couldn't imagine that there was a time when something as fundamental as voting rights had to be demanded for. It is the appreciation of such efforts and the gratitude towards those people( incidentally men and women who stood for this cause and many such basic rights) that we need to remind ourselves about in these times. Times, such as now, when we perhaps have so much freedom to say and do things that we forget the fact that it was because of some of those persistent heroes that we enjoy such privileges today!!! Happy Women's day!!!
